Recent data from the National Health Service in England suggest that during the coronavirus pandemic, people may be failing to seek medical attention for other life-threatening conditions. NHS England said that across the country, about only 60% of beds in acute-care hospitals were currently occupied (March and April 2020), which is a drop from 90% a year ago. Of greatest importance, patients with cardiac symptoms, such as a heart attack, are avoiding emergency department visits. The figure below demonstrates the drop-off of daily numbers of emergency department visits from cardiac patients in England during the coronavirus pandemic. This is concerning, as patients need to be treated for life-threatening conditions even during a pandemic. Also, patients who delay emergency department visits will present later in the course of their cardiac conditions with additional complications, which will make it even harder to treat them.
