WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) will be formally recognized as a diagnosis effective Oct. 1, 2023. The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) will add the following diagnosis codes for fiscal year 2024: I20.81: Angina pectoris with coronary microvascular dysfunction I21.B: Myocardial infarction with coronary microvascular dysfunction I24.81: Acute coronary microvascular dysfunction I25.85: Chronic coronary microvascular dysfunction “This is critical initial step in terms of having access to patients with this debilitating condition in order to advance treatment and improve clinical outcomes,” said Hayder D. Hashim, MD, an interventional cardiologist based at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Hashim credited his colleagues at MedStar Washington and the medical science team at Abbott with helping lead the effort to have CMD added to the ICD-10-CM. Dr. Hashim has focused his efforts on CMD, including working with Ron Waksman, MD, and Brian C. Case, MD, to develop the Coronary Microvascular Disease Registry (CMDR), which the MedStar Cardiovascular Research Network officially launched in June 2023 and is currently accepting participating sites. “We have been leading in this important, developing field,” Dr. Hashim said. “We believe that along with the new ICD code, the registry will continue to add to our growing knowledge of CMD.” Image Credit: Dave Braunschweig https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Icd10codeslogo.png
