  • Weapons of Mass Destruction

Today is June 22nd. Six years ago on June 22, 2016, John Lewis, my congressman and veteran of so many non-violent protests, was staging a sit-in in the congressional chambers in an attempt to move legislation in the wake of the most deadly mass shooting in America until that time. After that failed attempt, he invited me to a town hall meeting at the Martin Luther King, Sr. Community Center in Atlanta. Hundreds of people who were inspired by the protest John Lewis had led in Congress were there to tell their stories. I felt compelled to report this experience and wrote a column called “Guns – It's also a Medical Problem.” I said, “No one recommended abolishing the Second Amendment, although I wish we could reach consensus as to what it means.” However, they did tell of confrontations, road rage, domestic violence, home defense (misconstrued as an attack), accidental discharging of weapons, children play-acting, and suicides, all fatal because the instruments available to act on these emotions are powerful weapons designed to kill.
