  • Trends in Outcomes of Hospitalized Adults Undergoing Percutaneous Balloon Mitral Valvuloplasty in the United States

    Introduction

Surgical mitral commissurotomy, either open or closed, was the treatment for severe mitral stenosis (MS) until 1984 when percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (PBMV) was first described [1,2]. Rheumatic heart disease is the most common etiology of MS worldwide [2]. Although the prevalence of rheumatic MS continues to decline in the United States (US), it still remains a concern with a considerable immigrant population from regions with endemic rheumatic heart disease [3]. We aimed to examine the trends and resource utilization, inpatient outcomes, and complications associated with PBMV in the US utilizing a nationwide administrative database.
