We read with great interest the recent study by Van Belle et al. In this study, balloon-expandable (BE) transcatheter heart valves (THVs) were compared to old-generation self-expanding (SE) THVs (CoreValve, Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota) in a propensity-matched analysis using the FRANCE-TAVI Registry from January 2013 to December 2015. The authors concluded that old-generation SE-THVs were associated with a higher risk of paravalvular regurgitation (PVR) and higher rates of in-hospital and 2-year mortality than BE-THVs. This conclusion should be taken with caution.
