Last night I heard a beautiful concert by the conservatory students at the McDuffie Center for Strings of Mercer University. The author of one of the pieces, Alan Fletcher, CEO of the Aspen Music Festival, was present and offered a description of how his music came to be. It was commissioned by the Zurich Orchestra as a tribute to Zurich the City, Zurich the Lake, and Zurich's role in the Protestant Reformation. The music produced an image of rippling waves upon the lake and took me back 45 years to a ride upon those peaceful waves. More visits to Zurich to learn angioplasty and finally to help enable Andreas Gruentzig to leave his city and join us in Atlanta have engendered in me a sense of admiration for the contributions and genius originating from this part of Switzerland. When Fletcher mentioned the religious reformer Huldrych Zwingli as part of his inspiration for the symphony, I was struck by how another reformation had its roots in Zurich.
