  • Medical Meetings: A Catalyst for Innovation

Eugene Braunwald told me once that when it was time to update the new edition of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine textbook, unlike other subspecialties, the cardiology chapter had to be rewritten from scratch due to the countless innovations that were introduced to the field in between editions. This should not come as a surprise given the enthusiasm of engineers, biotechnologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals who continued to inspire each other and create a new culture of innovation dedicated to the dynamic field of cardiovascular disease. Heart disease remains the number one killer in the United States, which makes innovations highly impactful in the reduction of morbidity and mortality. Therefore, an innovation in the field has the potential for rapid dissemination and acceptance among millions of patients and healthcare providers who are involved in the field. In addition, the financial reward to the inventors and the industry is among the highest in the field of medicine, which also contributes to the motivation of the inventors and the investors to support innovation in the cardiology arena.
