  • Editorial: Just a few nanometers longer… can it make a difference in laser angioplasty?

Starting in the 1980s we began using laser catheters for peripheral vascular and coronary applications. Although laser intervention appeared to be safe, widespread adoption of this technology never occurred and many institutions performing the procedure seemed to promote it more for its marketing potential rather than its practical applications. Recent studies have shown not only its safety but also its effectiveness compared to standard PTCA for in-stent restenosis [  ]. Although, not approved for this application, we and others have used laser systems for previously placed, under deployed stents in coronary arteries with successful angiographic results [  ,  ]. Further research in the promising field of laser therapy is long overdue.
