It was a small restaurant, the hour was early, there were only a few customers, and the windows were open with a cool breeze wafting through, but it was a restaurant, and we were inside enjoying Capellini Elena and a glass of Montepulciano. This otherwise unremarkable event seemed to my wife and me an exciting adventure. However, our first indoor restaurant experience in over a year was not completely liberating. When we sat down and took off our masks, I found myself evaluating the direction of the airflow and casting suspicious glances at the family seated at the next table. The presence of young children was a clear signal to remain cautious, as they were surely unvaccinated “asymptomatic carriers.” After dinner, we put our masks back on and left with a sense of achievement but also feeling a bit silly since we were both vaccinated early in the year.
