  • Editorial: Reducing Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Palliative Care for Stroke Patients

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability and death in the U.S., with more than 795,000 cases each year  . These risks are heightened among minority racial/ethnic populations, in particular among Black and Hispanic Americans  . Patients who survive strokes often require long-term medical support, and clinical guidelines recommend referring stroke patients to palliative care (PC), specialists. PC is a specialty that focuses on patient- and family-centered medical care for patients with serious illnesses with the aim of improving quality of life and to relieve suffering  . Although PC is recommended for stroke patients, referrals remain low as shaped by the socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity of patients, type of facility, and geographic location  .
