The COVID-19 pandemic has produced a number of necessities, one of which is adequate physician coverage to staff cardiac intensive care units (CICUs) caring for these and other severely ill patients. Some hospitals are stressed to staff those units with physicians experienced in the care of such patients. The invention has been to shift other physicians into these roles, for which some do not feel adequately trained. Many have learned very fast but feel uncomfortable practicing beyond their expertise. Some hospitals require cardiologists, on a rotating basis, to staff critical care units. Others have enlisted cardiologists, especially interventional cardiologists, to assist in these units where they have never worked before.
