    Ventricular assist devices (VAD) were associated with 8.7% odds of stroke per year; in turn, stroke was strongly tied to in-hospital mortality. Ischemic strokes were twice as common as hemorrhagic ones in VAD patients, according to analysis of claims data from California, Florida, and New York from 2005 to 2013.
